Duties and Responsibilities
Since 2010 Professor Stephen Shennan, Director of the Institute of Archaeology, has been running a 4-year project entitled ‘Cultural Evolution of Neolithic Europe’, funded by the European Research Council, which has been applying cultural evolutionary approaches to the study of prehistory.
The aim of the project is to address specific questions concerning the links between demographic, economic, social and cultural patterns and processes and in doing so to provide the basis for a new account of the role of farming in transforming early European societies, c.6000-2000 cal BC.
The project has a team of five Post-doctoral researchers, specialising in archaeobotany, zooarchaeology, radiocarbon data, material culture and site data. We are seeking a researcher responsible for managing the database and GIS as well as carrying out more complex analytical procedures, including spatial and phylogenetic analyses and modelling, in association with the other RAs.
The post is available from 1 January 2013. The post is funded initially for 16 months until 30 April 2014. Further funding to support the post for another 6 months may be available.
Key Requirements
Applicants should have a PhD involving spatial/ mathematical modelling of archaeological or related data, or an equivalent level of expertise. A high level of mathematical/ statistical expertise enabling the creation of tailor-made methods to address novel problems and experience in the creation and use of Geographic Information Systems is also essential.
