For my Ph.D. thesis, I developed a system to play poker.
I’m interested to see whether a similar approach can be applied to agent based models.
My interests are focused on the development of new methodologies capable of exploring the complex relations between time, space and human behavior. Simulation, game theory and spatial analysis are some of the techniques that I use to explore different research questions, from the relation between environment and culture to the evolution of warfare.
I’m also the project manager of Pandora, an open-source ABM platform specifically designed for executing large scale simulations in High-Performance Computing environments.
Agent-based modeling of human behaviour; virtual experiments
I am investigating the use of machine learning techniques in non-stationary modeling environments to better reproduce aspects of human learning and decision-making in human-natural system simulations.
Currently doing a program evaluation of a GIZ reforestation project in the north of Mato Grosso state, Brazil (transition area from savannah to Amazon forest). Adoption of Agroforestry Systems by lower income farmers was the goal.
Research Assistant Professor at the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center at Old Dominion University. I work in the Storymodelers research group at VMASC where we use computational modeling approaches to try to understand complex social issues. Our main project is currently focused on modeling the dynamics of how host communities respond to the rapid influx of forced migrants.

I’m a trained philosopher, but, besides conceptual problems, I care for conclusions based on systematic observations and I also care for the applicability of those conclusions. One might say that I wish I were a behavioral economist, or maybe an ethologist/behavioral ecologist.
