Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Agent-Based Modelling (University of Oxford)

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) for a continuing interdisciplinary project to build an agent-based model (ABM) to represent the extraction of fish by fishing vessels in open ocean fisheries and the associated effects on ocean ecological systems. The goal of this effort will be to identify pragmatic fisheries management strategies tailored both to the complexity of the ocean ecosystem, and the limitations of social, economic and regulatory systems. This position is based in the School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford. This project is a collaboration between University of Oxford, Ocean Conservancy (Washington DC, USA) and other universities and fisheries management bodies. The post is initially for a 12-month period, during which time the PDRA will have the opportunity to work closely with these partners, making visits as necessary, as well as with practitioners, interdisciplinary experts, and advocates from a range of academic institutions and public agencies. The various partners will provide expertise in fisheries management/policy/economics, ocean ecology, model-building, and data analysis.

The successful applicant will be expected manage their own research and administrative activities and to assist in the production of published material, and grant-writing to support the ongoing development of the project. This project will provide the opportunity to experience first-hand how-to bring research into practical application, connect with top researchers, policy experts, practitioners and business leaders, and contribute to meaningful and timely solutions for the world’s oceans and fisheries.

You will hold, or be close to completion of, a Doctorate in an applied quantitative subject (e.g. computer science, applied mathematics, economics, physics, engineering, quantitative ecology) or equivalent research experience in a relevant subject. You will have expertise in agent-based model building and application, wider software development skills and a strong quantitative background. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to manage your own academic research and associated activities is essential.

Applications are particularly welcome and encouraged from women, black, and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in posts in SoGE. SoGE and SSEE are committed to equality and value diversity.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Monday 16 January 2023, and interviews are likely to be held in late January 2023.
